HYDROGEN SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION

INOCEL & TULLIO ABBATE

SUSTAINABLE BOATING

INOCEL is a European fuel-cell manufacturer co-founded by Mike Horn. They are designing and manufacturing the next generation of fuel cells.

Their product is one of the most powerful unit on the market with 200kWct./250kW peak and it removes the requirement for a heavier battery-focused hybrid powertrain. (Optimal in applications where battery integration is an issue)

To demonstrate the benefits of its Next-Generation fuel cell technology, an 27 feets (8mts) powerboat was commissioned with Tullio Abbate Shipyard.

This “light-hybrid” H2 powertrain architecture has been successfully confirmed by Geko, the integration arm of INOCEL, it was presented during a world first at the Monaco Boat Energy Challenge.

That boat is the Tullio Abbate Elite 27H model, powered by hydrogen, now sailing on Lake Como and nicknamed Poseidon. The boat is relying only on the hydrogen fuel cell for power, an 800V battery is used for boost and low speed manoeuvre like mooring.
The tests on that model were done with 21kgs of hydrogen at 700 bars, the autonomy is 80 NM (150km) with a peak power just under 500 bhp.

This boat is also participating in many events and exhibitions being the first electrified powerboat with less than 60kWh of battery. Only 5kWh of battery integrated against c. 190kWh for BlueGame, 84kwh for ChaseZero and c. 63kWh for MadBlue.

FUEL CELL POWER SYSTEM-HPS
250KW AND 500KW

THE HIGH POWER OUTPUTS,
ARE THE ONLY VIABLE OPTION FOR
FUN AND SUSTAINABLE BOATING

  1. Less weight than EVs allowing for better handling performance
  2. INOCEL has a high-power output per unit
  3. Making it easier to install and more usable
  4. Lower noise than combustion engines
  5. No pollution is emitted locally, only water
  6. The full range (125NM) is acquired in 10min using Hydrogen filling systems :
  7. Outside the water, on a trailer, at a car/truck refilling station
  8. With NATTPOWER Mediterranean network

HYDROGEN vs PURE EV

The table compares a FCEV version
of a powerboat against a pure EV one

  • The pure EV is the left column
  • The FCEV is on the righ

The hypothesis used are a 500 kW hydrogen powertrain and compare against a pure EV boat currently available to purchase (450kW)

The hydrogen system is able tostore 2.7 times the energy for a negligeable weight increase

Having more energy for the same weight unlocks key product features:

  • Range nearly tripled*
  • Only 10min for refilling
  • Net zero emission
  • Ability to sustain the power for long periods
